The KWT-6 was a high-frequency (HF or shortwave) transmitter and receiver. HF radio is especially useful for communicating over long distances (nationwide and even worldwide) without the need for intermediate facilities like satellites or relay stations.
The KWT-6 was used at several Cold War-era civil-defense and national-security communications sites, including the District of Columbia Civil Defense Emergency Operations Center, where it linked the facility to the Civil Defense National Radio System (CDNARS), and the Department of Energy's emergency relocation site at the agency's Germantown, MD field office.
